From Balvenie's Single Cask series, this deliciously complex and well-balanced dram from cask #3834 (ex-Bourbon)_ is one of the best releases thus far from the range. Don't confuse this with the widely available Port Cask - this is from a single barrel, which made less than 300 bottles worldwide. Dropped into oak around the turn of the century, this was lovingly aged for 21 year before careful selection and bottling for its unique deliciousness. Get it while you can!

Why do we love this whisky?

Balvenie is known for their expert Malt Masters. From having one of the longest-serving masters of all time in David Stewart, to the current master Kesley McKechnie, Balvenie has a reputation for incredibly cultured cask selection. This series showcases this experience perfectly, and this cask, one of the last in the series to have David Stewart at the helm, is truly special.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is Cask 3834, one of the final single barrel releases overseen by legendary Malt Master David Stewart before his retirement. Stewart served as Balvenie's Malt Master for over 50 years, making this bottling a historic piece representing the end of an era. Each single barrel release is unique, with only a limited number of bottles available from this specific cask, making it both a collector's item and a testament to Stewart's unparalleled expertise in cask selection.

Two decades in traditional oak allows the spirit to develop extraordinary complexity while maintaining Balvenie's signature elegance. The extended maturation period enables deeper integration of the honey, spice, and walnut flavours, creating layers that unfold gradually on the palate. Unlike younger whiskies that might show more aggressive alcohol notes, this 21-year-old achieves perfect balance where the oak influence enhances rather than overwhelms the distillery's characteristic honeyed sweetness.

Single barrel means this entire bottling comes from one individual cask rather than being blended from multiple barrels. This creates a unique flavour profile that can never be exactly replicated, as each cask develops its own microclimate during maturation. The traditional oak cask used here would have been hand-selected by the Malt Master for its exceptional quality, ensuring optimal interaction between wood and spirit over the 21-year aging period.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to allow the complex aromatics to develop fully. The medium body and intricate flavour profile of honey, spice, and walnut benefit from being savoured slowly without ice, which could mute the subtle nuances. A few drops of room temperature water can help open up the whisky further, but given its premium nature and perfect balance, many connoisseurs prefer it completely unadulterated to experience the Malt Master's intended expression.

Absolutely - this represents the perfect intersection of drinkability and collectibility. While it's rated as both a Limited Edition and Collectors' Item, the whisky inside is crafted to be enjoyed, showcasing David Stewart's legendary skill in cask selection. However, its historical significance as one of Stewart's final single barrel selections, combined with its limited availability, makes it an excellent addition to any serious whisky collection that will likely appreciate in value over time.
