Why do we love this whisky?

A pioneering release in the acclaimed “Stories” series, the ninth chapter represents a milestone for the distillery, as their first expression matured entirely in ex-Oloroso Sherry casks. The resulting dram is rich with bold sweetness, toasty warmth, and creamy decadence. The inaugural release by the longest serving Malt Master in the world, David C. Stewart MBE’s protégée, Kelsey McKechnie, this Scotch signals a new era for The Balvenie while honouring the craftsmanship that has defined them since 1892. From its Speyside home, they remain one of the few distilleries to uphold traditions such as growing their own barley, floor malting, and on-site coopering - each step infusing rich history and authenticity into every bottle. This is more than a collector’s dream; it’s a celebration of heritage and innovation, a dram that weaves seamlessly through past and future. This is a sip of history in the making.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is The Balvenie's first expression matured entirely in ex-Oloroso Sherry casks, marking a pioneering moment in their acclaimed 'Stories' series. The exclusive use of these Spanish sherry casks imparts distinctive rich sweetness and creamy decadence that differs from their traditional bourbon barrel maturation. It also represents the inaugural release by new Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, signalling a new era while maintaining the distillery's traditional craftsmanship methods.

Oloroso Sherry casks are known for their oxidative ageing process, which creates nutty, dried fruit characteristics that transfer beautifully to whisky during maturation. These casks contribute the bold sweetness, toasty warmth, and fruitcake notes found in this expression, while the 19-year maturation period allows deep integration of these flavours. The medium-bodied palate weight suggests perfect balance between the wood influence and the whisky's natural character, creating complexity without overwhelming the Speyside distillery character.

The Balvenie remains one of Scotland's few distilleries maintaining complete traditional production methods, including growing their own barley on-site, floor malting by hand, and operating their own cooperage. These time-honoured practices, unchanged since 1892, ensure complete control over quality and flavour development from grain to bottle. Their floor malting process particularly contributes to the whisky's authentic character, as hand-turning the barley creates subtle flavour compounds that mechanical processes cannot replicate.

Kelsey McKechnie is the protégée of David C. Stewart MBE, the world's longest-serving Malt Master, and this 19 Year Old represents her inaugural release as The Balvenie's new Malt Master. This transition marks a historic moment for the distillery, as McKechnie becomes one of the few female Malt Masters in Scotland's whisky industry. Her appointment ensures continuity of The Balvenie's traditional approach while bringing fresh perspective to future innovations, making this release both a collector's piece and a symbol of the industry's evolution.

The rich fruitcake and spice notes, enhanced by Oloroso cask maturation, pair beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, aged cheeses like Manchego or aged Cheddar, and traditional Christmas pudding. The toasty warmth and creamy texture also complement roasted nuts, particularly almonds and walnuts, while the medium body won't overpower delicate pairings like honeycomb or toffee. For savoury options, the whisky's complexity matches well with charcuterie featuring dried fruits and spiced meats.
