Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie was inspired to produce an even fruitier, sweeter version of Balvenie. Taking virgin oak barrels (barrels that have never been used before) from Kentucky and giving them a deep toasting at the distillery's cooperage, Kelsey then filled them with single malt aged in ex-bourbon barrels. In classic American oak style, the end result is a richly sweet single malt where everything is dialled up a notch.

Why do we love this whisky?

Matured exclusively in American oak barrels, The Balvenie Stories Sweet Toast of American Oak 12 Year Old, is the first whisky in Balvenie's Stories collection. It's a delectably complex dram with candied orange and lemon peel, toasted coconut, rich vanilla and toffee notes at the forefront. Lusciously smooth and malty, the palate is further enveloped with honied baking spice, think notes of ginger, cardamom, and melted brown sugar.

Frequently Asked Questions

American oak imparts distinctly sweeter, more vanilla-forward characteristics compared to European oak, which tends to offer more tannin and spice. The Balvenie's exclusive use of American oak barrels creates those signature candied citrus and rich vanilla notes, while the wood's looser grain allows for greater interaction between spirit and timber. This maturation style is particularly prized for developing the honeyed, toffee-like sweetness that defines this expression.

Twelve years strikes an ideal balance between youthful vibrancy and mature complexity in single malt Scotch. This aging period allows the spirit to develop those sophisticated baking spice notes like ginger and cardamom, while maintaining the bright citrus character that might fade with longer maturation. The medium-bodied texture achieved after 12 years provides the perfect canvas for the interplay between the malt's natural sweetness and the American oak's vanilla influence.

The whisky's candied orange and vanilla notes make it exceptional with dark chocolate desserts, particularly those featuring citrus elements or coconut. The honied baking spices pair beautifully with apple tart, crème brûlée, or even savoury dishes like glazed pork or duck with orange. The smooth, malty character also complements aged cheeses, especially those with nutty or caramelised flavours that echo the whisky's toffee notes.

Absolutely - this expression serves as an excellent introduction to single malt Scotch whisky. The American oak maturation creates a notably smooth, approachable profile without harsh edges, while the familiar flavours of vanilla, toffee, and citrus provide an accessible entry point. The medium body offers substance without overwhelming complexity, and the sweet, malty character appeals to those transitioning from blended whiskies or other spirits.

As the inaugural release in Balvenie's Stories collection, this whisky represents the distillery's commitment to showcasing specific maturation techniques and their impact on flavour. The Stories range focuses on the narrative behind each expression's creation, highlighting the craftsmanship and deliberate choices that shape the final product. This American oak expression demonstrates how a single variable - barrel type - can create a distinctly different character while maintaining Balvenie's signature elegance and quality.
