Why do we love this whisky?
Stauning's flagship peated single malt, Smoke, will easily appeal to fans of Ardmore or Arran's peated Machrie Moor. More broadly speaking, though, this is sure to impress anyone seeking a daily dram which balances smoke with sweetness, without being overpowered by maritime salinity. Matured for 5-6 years in a mix of first-fill ex-bourbon casks, first-fill ex-madeira casks, first-fill ex-Jamaican rum casks, and Virgin American Oak casks. Aside from the oak barrels, everything that goes into this whisky is 100% handmade at the distillery using nothing but local ingredients, and it shows. The profile of this new Nordic whisky is incredibly terroir-driven. Stauning reckons you can taste the buzzing bees and the heather of the moorland in this honey-hued liquid, describing it as a gentle bonfire smoke blended with elegant notes of citrus, honey and fresh herbs. As the palate builds, so does the richness with tobacco, nuts, and vanilla, ending with a delicious warming finish that will gently blow you away.
