Why do we love this whisky?

In sourcing the finest French oak grenache wine casks in the country, Spirit Thief headed straight for the Clarendon region of the Adelaide Hills. Where the climate is reminiscent of the Mediterranean and grenache is thriving in the fertile soils of the new world. Elegant and complex, this single malt whisky exudes aromas of citrus blossom orchards and Valencia oranges from the streets of Spain. On the palate, peaches, nectarines and sugared almonds, cinnamon and white chocolate, before rounding out with five-spice, nutmeg and a hint of white pepper.

Frequently Asked Questions

French oak grenache casks from the Clarendon Hills bring unique Mediterranean-influenced characteristics to whisky maturation. The previous grenache wine imparts fruity esters and tannin structures that complement the whisky's natural flavours, while French oak contributes elegant vanilla and spice notes. This combination creates the distinctive citrus blossom and stone fruit profile found in this Spirit Thief expression, demonstrating how wine cask finishing can transform a whisky's character beyond traditional bourbon barrel maturation.

The Clarendon region's Mediterranean-like climate in the Adelaide Hills produces grenache wines with concentrated fruit flavours and balanced acidity. When these casks are used for whisky maturation, they transfer the terroir characteristics of the region into the spirit. The fertile soils and climate conditions that create exceptional grenache wines also contribute to the whisky's complex fruit notes of peaches, nectarines, and Valencia oranges, creating a unique Australian expression that reflects both the whisky's origin and the wine region's influence.

The spice complexity in this whisky develops through the interaction between the spirit and the French oak grenache casks over time. The cinnamon and five-spice notes emerge from the oak's natural compounds, while the white pepper and nutmeg characteristics develop from the grenache wine residues and oxidation processes. This layered spice profile, finishing with subtle white pepper, demonstrates how extended cask interaction creates depth and sophistication in single malt whisky beyond the initial distillation character.

The 2023 Gold Medal from the Tokyo Whisky and Spirits Competition represents international recognition of this whisky's exceptional quality and craftsmanship. This competition is highly regarded in the spirits industry for its rigorous judging standards and diverse international panel. The award validates Spirit Thief's innovative approach to cask selection and maturation, positioning this Tasmanian whisky among the world's finest single malts and demonstrating Australia's growing reputation in premium whisky production.

Begin by nosing the whisky to identify the citrus blossom and Valencia orange aromas, then take small sips to allow the stone fruit flavours of peaches and nectarines to develop on your palate. The sugared almonds and white chocolate notes will emerge in the mid-palate, followed by the warming spices of cinnamon, five-spice, and nutmeg. Allow the whisky to breathe between sips to fully appreciate how the French oak grenache cask influence evolves, finishing with the subtle white pepper that provides the final complexity.
