Why do we love this whisky?

In the glass, it presents a bright gold colour. The nose is inviting, featuring aromas of fresh apples, pears, and a delightful hint of honey. There's a gentle floral note as well, along with a whisper of vanilla and a touch of maltiness.

On the palate, Speyburn 10 is light and fruity, with flavours of ripe stone fruits, like peaches and apricots, balanced by a creamy texture. You'll also notice hints of citrus and a subtle spiciness, making it a well-rounded whisky.

The finish is refreshing and smooth, leaving a lingering sweetness with a touch of oak. It’s a fantastic dram for both newcomers and seasoned whisky lovers, perfect for sipping neat or in a classic whisky highball. A lovely expression that embodies the spirit of Speyside!

Notes from the maker

To this day Speyburn remains the only distillery to draw its water from the Granty Burn, a major tributary of the River Spey. Here, in the secluded, tree-lined valley, this golden liquid rests in hand-selected American oak ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks; breathing in the natural elements of this outstanding region. The resulting whisky is as mellow as its surroundings. This award-winning dram is a deep, complex and well-balanced single malt. There are touches of fresh fruit, hints of toffee and butterscotch, and a long smooth, sweet finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Speyside single malt's light-bodied character and approachable flavour profile make it an excellent entry point into Scotch whisky. The prominent fruit notes of apple, pear, and stone fruits, combined with gentle honey sweetness, provide familiar tastes that don't overwhelm newcomers. Its smooth finish and lack of aggressive peat or heavy oak influence create a welcoming experience that builds confidence for exploring more complex expressions.

Speyside is renowned for producing elegant, fruit-forward single malts, and Speyburn 10 exemplifies this regional style perfectly. The area's pure water sources and temperate climate contribute to the whisky's clean, fresh apple and pear notes. Unlike the heavily peated Islay whiskies or the robust Highland expressions, Speyside malts like this focus on finesse and balance, showcasing the distillery's craftsmanship rather than overwhelming environmental influences.

The 10-year maturation represents the sweet spot where Speyburn's spirit character harmonises with oak influence without being dominated by it. This aging period allows the whisky to develop complexity through interaction with the barrel - gaining vanilla, toffee, and butterscotch notes - while preserving the fresh, fruity distillery character. It's long enough to smooth out any harsh edges but not so long that the oak overwhelms the delicate Speyside fruit profile.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the aromatic complexity of apple, honey, and floral notes. Adding a few drops of water can open up additional flavours and soften the alcohol warmth. For a refreshing alternative, try it as a whisky highball with quality soda water and a twist of lemon, which complements the citrus undertones while maintaining the fruit-forward character.

This prestigious international recognition validates Speyburn 10's quality against global competition, particularly significant given Japan's expertise in whisky appreciation and production. The 90-point score reflects exceptional balance, craftsmanship, and value proposition in the single malt category. Such awards often indicate that the whisky successfully represents its regional style while offering distinctive character that appeals to both critics and consumers worldwide.
