Nova highlights the unadulterated success that malted barley, rye and wheat can achieve. With three years in American ex-bourbon barrels and a very short finishing period in virgin French Limousin oak casks, the golden liquid inside this distinctive bottle is supple and almost creamy on the palate.

Why do we love this whisky?

Puni, Italy's pioneer whisky distillery, is situated within the Alpine village of Glorenza, which we like to think of as the 'Italian Highlands'. The name comes from the very river that flows through the valley in which it resides, and the distillery utilises its enviable geographical location to full advantage, incorporating pristine alpine waters and locally sourced malted grains into its whisky-making arsenal. Expect to be enthralled by notes of vanilla, yellow pear, citrus and tropical fruits, which create an interesting counterpoint to the subtle spiciness of the oak. Softly floral, the smooth and lingering finish is light and clean. They call this their purest expression yet, and if this is the future of Italian whisky, well, what an utter delight we're in for mofo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Italian whisky like Puni Nova benefits from the unique Alpine terroir of Northern Italy, using pristine mountain waters and locally sourced malted grains. The warmer Mediterranean climate accelerates maturation compared to Scotland's cooler conditions, often producing whiskies with brighter fruit notes and softer tannins. Puni's location in Glorenza combines traditional Scottish techniques with Italian craftsmanship, resulting in a distinctive profile featuring tropical fruits and citrus alongside classic vanilla and oak spice.

Given Puni Nova's medium body and bright fruit character, it's excellent neat at room temperature to appreciate its vanilla, pear and citrus complexity. A few drops of water can open up the tropical fruit notes and soften any spice. The clean, floral finish also makes it suitable for whisky cocktails where you want the malt character to shine through, such as a whisky sour or even an Italian twist on a classic old fashioned.

Absolutely - Puni Nova's approachable profile makes it an excellent introduction to single malt whisky. The prominent vanilla and fruit notes are familiar and welcoming, while the medium body provides substance without overwhelming intensity. The clean, light finish won't intimidate newcomers with harsh alcohol burn or overly complex flavours. It bridges the gap between accessible and interesting, offering enough character to educate the palate while remaining thoroughly enjoyable.

The vanilla and tropical fruit notes in Puni Nova complement Italian desserts beautifully, particularly tiramisu or panna cotta. The subtle oak spice pairs excellently with aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Gorgonzola. For savoury options, try it with prosciutto or bresaola - the whisky's clean finish won't compete with delicate cured meats. The citrus elements also make it a surprising match for dark chocolate or even fruit-based desserts.

Puni's location in the Italian Alps provides exceptionally pure water from mountain springs, which forms the foundation of the whisky's clean, crisp character. The high altitude and temperature variations between day and night create unique maturation conditions that contribute to the whisky's balanced complexity. The pristine environment allows the locally sourced malted grains to express their terroir, while the alpine air quality ensures a pure distillation process that results in the notably smooth and lingering finish.
