Why do we love this whisky?

This delicious, peated single malt will either put India on the premium whisky map for you, or change the way you think about Indian whisky. Up to seven years in oak casks, which in the warm, humid climate of Goa is an age, have been very kind to this velvety drop. Sweet, rich caramel and toasted toffee intermingle with marmalade and cocoa for an incredible whisky experience. The smoky peat notes are balanced perfectly with the sweet richness and make for a long, delicate finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indian whisky like this Paul John benefits from Goa's tropical climate, which accelerates maturation compared to Scotland's cooler temperatures. The warm, humid conditions mean that seven years of ageing in India can achieve similar complexity to much older Scottish whiskies. This climate also creates unique flavour interactions between the spirit and oak, contributing to the distinctive sweet caramel and toffee notes that complement the smoky peat character.

The peat smoke is introduced during the malting process, where barley is dried over burning peat fires, imparting those characteristic smoky flavours. What's remarkable about this Paul John expression is how the tropical ageing environment mellows and integrates the peat smoke with sweet elements like marmalade and cocoa. The result is a more harmonious balance than you might find in heavily peated whiskies from cooler climates, where the smoke can remain more aggressive.

Jim Murray's exceptional 96-point rating reflects this whisky's remarkable achievement in balancing complexity with drinkability. The score recognises how Paul John has successfully created a peated single malt that showcases India's unique terroir while maintaining international quality standards. The integration of sweet richness with smoky peat, combined with the sophisticated influence of tropical ageing, demonstrates masterful distillation and maturation techniques that rival established whisky regions.

The sweet caramel and cocoa notes make this whisky excellent with dark chocolate desserts or rich fruit cakes, while the smoky peat character pairs beautifully with grilled meats or aged cheeses. Indian cuisine works particularly well - try it with tandoori dishes where the smokiness complements charred flavours, or with spiced lamb where the whisky's complexity can stand up to bold spices. The marmalade notes also make it surprisingly good with citrus-based desserts.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the aromatic complexity of peat smoke, caramel, and cocoa. A few drops of water can help open up the flavours and soften the alcohol, revealing more of the delicate marmalade and toffee notes. Given the medium body and long finish, take time between sips to let the flavours develop on your palate - the tropical ageing creates layers that unfold gradually.
