Why do we love this whisky?

We think Jim Murray's Whisky Bible nailed it on the head when they called this 25-year-old single malt a 'reminder of why this distillery is capable of producing World Whisky of the Year!'
For a remarkable quarter-century, hand-selected casks of Old Pulteney's rare (and oldest) single malt whisky expressions breathed the invigorating Caithness Coast salty sea air.
Safely sheltered from the fast-paced world in the darkened calm of the distillery warehouse this maritime malt is a testament to the power of slow, meticulously mellowed along at its own steady pace. Firstly aged in American oak, providing spice and sweetness, it was then treated to Spanish oak granting depth and colour to the hefty maturation process.
Notes of sea breeze and salted caramel are playfully entwined with rich dried & honeyed fruits, citrus zest, touches of vanilla and smokey oak. Smooth and complex, this wonderful whisky showcases a delightful balance between sweetness and subtle briny notes that embodies both Pulteney Distillery’s award-winning devotion to its craft and its unmistakable coastal character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Old Pulteney's distillery sits on the rugged Caithness Coast of Scotland, where the whisky literally breathes in the salty sea air during its 25-year maturation. This maritime environment infuses the spirit with distinctive briny notes and sea breeze characteristics that you simply can't replicate inland. The coastal influence creates a unique terroir effect in whisky-making, similar to how ocean proximity affects wine regions, resulting in those signature salted caramel notes that make Highland coastal whiskies so distinctive.

The dual-cask maturation process is a sophisticated technique that builds complexity layer by layer over the 25-year aging period. American oak contributes vanilla sweetness and warming spices like nutmeg, while Spanish oak adds deeper colour, richer tannins, and those honeyed fruit characteristics. This sequential aging approach allows each wood type to contribute its strengths without overwhelming the delicate coastal character, creating a more nuanced final product than single-cask aging could achieve.

Quarter-century maturation allows for extraordinary integration of flavours, where the initial spirit's harsh edges are completely smoothed away and complex secondary flavours develop. The extended aging enables the whisky to extract maximum character from both oak types while allowing oxidation to create those rich dried fruit notes and citrus zest complexity. At this age, the spirit achieves a perfect balance where no single element dominates, and the maritime influence becomes beautifully woven throughout rather than sitting as a separate note.

Medium-bodied indicates this whisky sits perfectly between light Highland expressions and heavy Islay malts, offering substantial mouthfeel without being overwhelming. Despite its 25-year age, it maintains an elegant weight that allows the complex flavour layers to unfold gradually on the palate. This body weight is ideal for showcasing the interplay between the coastal salinity, oak influence, and fruit characteristics without any element masking the others, making it approachable for both seasoned whisky drinkers and those exploring premium aged expressions.

This expression earned a Gold Medal at the prestigious International Spirits Challenge 2021, scoring an impressive 90 points from industry experts. More significantly, Jim Murray's influential Whisky Bible praised it as a reminder of why Old Pulteney is capable of producing 'World Whisky of the Year' calibre expressions. These accolades reflect the distillery's exceptional craftsmanship and this particular bottling's outstanding representation of Highland coastal single malt character, positioning it among Scotland's finest aged whiskies.
