Old Pulteney single malt is distilled in Wick on Scotland's northern coast, and is matured in warehouses just 300 meters from the North Sea, which explains why it is famously known as "The Maritime Malt". This maritime location means the whisky takes on a distinctive briny, sea-spray character, imbued with notes of sea salt, honey, and coastal air. The Single Cask #1193, we have here, was distilled in 2008 and has also been matured by the sea in a hand-selected an ex-bourbon barrel. Amber gold in the glass with bittersweet notes of salted caramel and toffee, further complemented by creamy chocolate, and invigorated by fresh citrus and flecks of salty costal air.

Why do we love this whisky?

This is the second Old Pulteney single cask exclusive to the Australian market offering brought in by Barrel & Batch; with the first lovingly coined 'Half-Time Oranges', this second release has been given the moniker 'Lemon Butter Cake'. Honey, creme brûlée, and vanilla sponge evolve into sweet candied fruits and lemon butter with an invigorating lift of sea air on the citrusy, moreish finish. It is a layered and satisfying dram reminiscent of its coastal origins.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a single cask bottling exclusively for the Australian market, meaning it comes from just one barrel rather than being blended from multiple casks like standard releases. Single cask whiskies showcase the unique character that develops in individual barrels, making each release unrepeatable. The coastal influence of Old Pulteney's Wick location adds maritime notes that complement the cask's development over 15+ years.

The nickname reflects the whisky's distinctive flavour profile that emerged during maturation in cask #1193. The combination of honey, vanilla sponge, and prominent lemon butter notes creates a dessert-like character that's both rich and citrusy. This playful naming follows the tradition of the first Australian exclusive 'Half-Time Oranges', showing how each single cask develops its own personality.

Old Pulteney's distillery sits on Scotland's rugged northeastern coast in Wick, where sea air influences the maturation process. The maritime environment contributes to the whisky's signature 'invigorating lift of sea air' that balances the sweet, rich flavours. This coastal character is particularly pronounced in longer-aged expressions like this 2008 vintage, where years of exposure create a distinctive salinity that enhances the citrusy finish.

Medium-bodied indicates this whisky sits perfectly between light and full-bodied expressions, offering substantial mouthfeel without being overly heavy or syrupy. This weight allows the complex layers of honey, creme brûlée, and candied fruits to unfold gradually on the palate. The medium body also means it's versatile for both neat sipping and can handle a splash of water to open up additional flavours.

Absolutely - this ticks multiple collector boxes with its single cask status, Australian market exclusivity, and provenance from an iconic Highland distillery. The specific cask number (#1193) and vintage (2008) make it traceable and unique, while the 'Rare' rating reflects its limited availability. Single cask releases from established distilleries like Old Pulteney often appreciate in value, especially when they're market exclusives with distinctive character profiles.
