A whisky created to tell a story of time and place. Aged in exceptional tawny barrels painstakingly selected from the region in which the Kelly gang lived and operated - a region that also happens to make some of the best dessert wines in the world. This is a vibrant yet restrained drop that manages to be, paradoxically, both moreish and completely satisfying.

Why do we love this whisky?

A vibrant yet smooth Australian whisky aged in ex-tawny barrels sourced from the Beechworth, Rutherglen and Glenrowan area - the heart of Australian sticky production. The tawny made in this area is produced in a very similar style to how it's made in Portugal, meaning the wines are viscous, sweet and rich. The Christmas cake like aspects of the wine are imparted on the barrels and, in time, transferred subtly to this whisky. The meeting of the natural caramel, vanilla and chocolate notes of the whisky and the dried, sweet fruit of the tawny create a complex and balanced whisky without sacrificing any of the power that you'd expect from a 50% ABV Aussie drop. Very Australian, extremely smooth and completely delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ex-tawny barrels come from Australia's premier fortified wine regions - Beechworth, Rutherglen and Glenrowan - where tawny is made in the traditional Portuguese style. These barrels previously held viscous, sweet wines with Christmas cake characteristics, which gradually impart dried fruit and rich sweetness to the whisky. This creates a distinctly Australian flavour profile that marries the whisky's natural caramel and vanilla notes with the complex fruit character of premium Australian fortified wine.

At 50% ABV, this whisky delivers substantial power while maintaining remarkable smoothness - a testament to quality distillation and careful barrel selection. The higher alcohol content carries the complex flavours more intensely, allowing the tawny barrel influences and natural whisky characteristics to shine through. Despite the strength, the ex-tawny barrel conditioning helps round out any harsh edges, creating a balanced spirit that drinks smoother than many lower-proof whiskies.

This whisky offers a sophisticated balance of traditional bourbon characteristics with uniquely Australian influences. You'll find classic caramel, vanilla and chocolate notes from the whisky itself, enhanced by dried fruit sweetness and Christmas cake spices from the ex-tawny barrels. The medium body carries these flavours beautifully, creating layers of complexity that evolve on the palate - from initial sweetness through rich fruit to warming spice and oak.

This whisky has earned impressive recognition with Gold Medals at both the Sydney Royal Distilled Spirits Awards and Australian Distilled Spirit Awards in 2024, scoring 90 points at each competition. These awards represent some of Australia's most prestigious spirits competitions, judged by industry experts who evaluate hundreds of entries. The dual gold medal wins demonstrate consistent quality and highlight this whisky's standing among Australia's finest craft spirits.

While styled as a bourbon-type whisky, this Australian expression offers a distinctly different character through its unique barrel finishing. Traditional American bourbon uses new charred oak barrels, whereas this whisky gains complexity from ex-tawny barrels that previously held sweet fortified wine. This creates a more fruit-forward profile with additional sweetness and spice complexity that you won't find in American bourbon, while still maintaining the caramel and vanilla backbone bourbon lovers appreciate.
