Why do we love this whisky?

Mortlach’s signature ‘meatiness’ unapologetically jumps from the glass with power. Coupled with complimentary aromatics of forest berries and fresh saline edge. Adding just a touch of water to the glass will dial down the spiciness and soften the palate. The finish broadens out with hits of cracked black pepper framed by fresh cedar wood and lashings of dark toffee notes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mortlach's famous meaty character comes from their unique distillation process using 2.81 times distillation - an unusual fractional method that creates complex, robust flavours. This technique, combined with their traditional worm tub condensers, produces the rich, savoury notes that distinguish Mortlach from lighter Speyside whiskies. The meatiness provides a perfect foundation for the forest berry and saline notes in this special release.

Start by tasting it neat to experience the full power and spiciness, then add just a few drops of water to unlock different layers. The water will soften the palate and reduce the heat, allowing the forest berries and dark toffee notes to shine through more clearly. Serve in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to concentrate the aromatics and enhance the saline edge that makes this expression so compelling.

A 90-point rating indicates this is an exceptional whisky that represents outstanding quality and complexity. The 'Super Rare' designation suggests limited availability, making this 2022 Special Release a collectible expression that's likely to become increasingly scarce. Special releases from established distilleries like Mortlach often showcase experimental cask selections or unique maturation techniques that won't be repeated, adding to their desirability among collectors.

This flavour combination reflects Mortlach's complex maturation and distillation character, where the fruity forest berry notes likely come from careful cask selection, while the cracked black pepper emerges from the spirit's natural congeners and wood interaction. The interplay between sweet fruit, warming spice, and that distinctive saline edge creates a sophisticated tasting experience that evolves as you sip. This balance is what separates premium single malts from simpler expressions.

The meaty, savoury character pairs beautifully with rich dishes like aged beef, game meats, or strong cheeses that can match its intensity. The forest berry notes make it surprisingly good with dark chocolate desserts or berry-based puddings. For a Scottish approach, try it alongside haggis or smoked salmon, where the saline edge will complement the smokiness while the cedar and toffee notes provide a warming finish.
