Method and Madness is an experimental brand hatched from the minds of the masters and apprentices of Midleton Distillery. These whiskeys are on a much smaller scale that the distillery's other flagships like Jameson and Redbreast with innovation and playful curiosity being the primary goal. This one's matured in traditional Sherry & Bourbon barrels then, rather excitingly, finished in casks made of French Chestnut.

Why do we love this whisky?

The folks at Midleton state that this whiskey combines what they’ve always done and what they’ve never tried before, and the experimentation pays off in spades. From County Cork, Ireland, this single pot still release finished in French chestnut is perfumed and earthy on the nose. Oily, velvet-like on the palate it offers up a complex and rich flavour profile of Christmas spice, sweet fruit, and fragrant citrus that playfully weave with the red liquorice, honey, orange peel, rosemary and mint notes of the nose. The finish is long and decadent in its richly woody farewell. An amazing dram, made all the better by innovative experimentation with casks by Midleton!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Method and Madness expression represents Midleton's experimental approach, finishing their traditional single pot still whiskey in French chestnut casks rather than conventional oak. This innovative maturation process creates a unique flavour profile that bridges traditional Irish whiskey-making with modern cask experimentation. The French chestnut imparts distinctive earthy and perfumed characteristics that you won't find in standard Irish releases.

Single pot still is a uniquely Irish style of whiskey made from a mash of both malted and unmalted barley, distilled in traditional copper pot stills at a single distillery. This method creates a distinctively oily, spicy character that's different from single malt Scotch or American bourbon. The unmalted barley gives the whiskey its characteristic creamy texture and complex spice notes, making it one of Ireland's most celebrated whiskey styles.

Given its complex flavour profile featuring Christmas spices, citrus, and herbal notes, this whiskey is best enjoyed neat or with just a splash of water to open up the aromatics. Serve it at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass to concentrate the perfumed nose. The medium body and long finish make it perfect for slow sipping, allowing you to discover the interplay between the sweet fruit notes and the earthy French chestnut influence.

The whiskey's Christmas spice and citrus notes make it an excellent companion to dark chocolate desserts or spiced fruit cakes. Its herbal qualities of rosemary and mint also pair beautifully with aged cheeses, particularly Irish varieties like Cashel Blue. For a more adventurous pairing, try it alongside dishes featuring orange or honey glazes, as these flavours echo the whiskey's own tasting notes.

Absolutely - this expression earned a Silver Medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2019, recognising its exceptional quality. As part of Method and Madness's experimental range, it represents a significant moment in modern Irish whiskey innovation. The unique French chestnut finishing and limited production nature make it both a conversation starter and a worthy addition to any whiskey collection focused on innovative Irish expressions.
