Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this whisky?

Named after the chain of islands that stretch from southern Japan to Taiwan, this incredible whisky hails from the sub-tropical climate of Okinawa. Pure rice spirit is aged in the island's warm, humid weather in high quality ex-Bourbon barrels for 24 years. This treatment achieves a level of rich, deep, unique boldness that only the southern climes of Japan could produce. Only 6000 bottles of this beauty were created worldwide, with Australia only receiving 200 of these. This is one for collectors, lovers of interesting takes on classic spirits, and anyone looking to try something truly unique!

Frequently Asked Questions

Okinawa's sub-tropical climate creates dramatically different ageing conditions compared to Japan's cooler mainland regions. The warm, humid weather accelerates the interaction between spirit and wood, allowing deeper penetration of flavours while increasing evaporation rates. This unique terroir produces whiskies with more intense tropical fruit notes and richer wood extraction than their northern counterparts, making Kujira's 24-year expression a fascinating study in how climate shapes whisky character.

Rice-based spirits reflect Japan's agricultural heritage and local ingredient availability, particularly in southern regions like Okinawa where rice cultivation thrives. Unlike barley-based whiskies, rice creates a cleaner, more delicate foundation that allows the 24 years of bourbon barrel ageing to shine through more prominently. The rice base also contributes subtle sweetness and smoothness that complements the vanilla and chocolate notes developed during the extended maturation period.

Tropical ageing is like putting whisky development on fast-forward - the heat and humidity cause more rapid extraction of wood compounds and faster evaporation. What might take 30-40 years in Scotland could achieve similar depth in 24 years in Okinawa's climate. However, this also means higher angel's share losses, making aged tropical whiskies incredibly rare and explaining why only 6000 bottles of this expression exist worldwide.

The combination of rice spirit base, ex-bourbon barrels, and tropical ageing creates a complex interplay of sweetness and spice. Expect the vanilla and chocolate notes to be more pronounced due to the intense wood interaction, while the pepper adds complexity and balance. The medium body suggests elegant integration rather than overwhelming richness, with the rice foundation providing a silky texture that carries these flavours beautifully across the palate.

With only 200 bottles allocated to Australia from a global release of 6000, this represents both exceptional drinking and investment potential. The rarity factor and unique production story make it highly collectible, but the 24-year maturation and distinctive Okinawan character also make it an extraordinary tasting experience. Consider your priorities - collectors might hold one bottle while opening another, as experiencing this unique expression of Japanese whisky craftsmanship is equally valuable.
