This 12-year-old expression we have here is a wonderful, subtly peated Japanese single malt whisky hailing from Suntory's Hakushu distillery. Built in 1973 and residing in the in the lush, old-growth forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake, the distillery benefits from the pure, clean mountain water flowing through these dense forests. These fecund natural surroundings follow through, rather fittingly to the golden liquid's fresh and foresty flavour profile. The delightfully delicate balance of fruit, herbs, and gentle smoke makes this whisky uniquely delicious however you choose to serve it; perfect neat, sublime on the rocks, or, as the Japanese do, with soda and ice in a highball. Kanpai mofo!

Why do we love this whisky?

Suntory produces some of the most sought-after and acclaimed Japanese whiskies around. Why? Well, mofo, the House of Suntory is synonymous with quality Japanese whisky, due to their deft hand at combining traditional Scottish techniques with precision Japanese craftsmanship. Suntory is, after all, the oldest and most historic distiller in the country.

The youngest age statement in the Hakushu range, the 12-year-old, skillfully embodies the essence of nature. Herbaceous mint and basil playfully interact with pine needle, cut grass and toasted barley. The velvety palate glides with sweet pear, subtle citrus, vibrant green apple and green tea, refreshingly layered with a wonderful waft of smoke that carries right through to the lingering finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hakushu represents the unique Japanese approach to whisky-making, where traditional Scottish distillation techniques are refined through Japanese precision and local terroir. The distillery's location in the Japanese Southern Alps provides exceptionally pure water and a climate that creates distinctive herbaceous and green characteristics rarely found in Scottish whiskies. This results in a cleaner, more delicate profile with prominent mint, pine, and green tea notes that reflect Japan's natural environment.

This expression earned the prestigious 'World's Best Single Malt' at the World Whiskies Awards, reflecting its exceptional quality and craftsmanship. Suntory's status as Japan's oldest distiller, combined with their meticulous attention to detail, has elevated Japanese whisky to compete with the world's finest. The 12-year-old represents the perfect entry point into Hakushu's range, showcasing the distillery's signature style while remaining accessible to both newcomers and connoisseurs.

The herbaceous and smoky character of Hakushu 12 makes it exceptional with Japanese cuisine, particularly sushi, sashimi, and grilled fish where its green tea and citrus notes complement delicate flavours. The whisky's medium body and subtle smoke also pair beautifully with light cheeses, fresh herbs, and even chocolate desserts. Its refreshing quality makes it ideal as an aperitif or digestif, especially when served neat or with a single ice cube to open up the complex aromatics.

Serve Hakushu 12 neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate its delicate aromatics of mint, pine, and green apple. Adding a few drops of pure water or a single ice cube can help open up the more subtle flavours and reduce any alcohol heat. The whisky's refreshing nature also makes it excellent for a Japanese-style highball with premium soda water and ice, which enhances its herbaceous qualities while maintaining its elegant character.

At 12 years, this expression represents the perfect balance between youthful vibrancy and mature complexity in Hakushu's range. This aging period allows the whisky to develop its signature herbaceous character while retaining the fresh, green qualities that define the distillery's house style. The maturation in Japanese oak and the unique climate of the Southern Alps creates the ideal conditions for developing the whisky's distinctive mint, pine needle, and green tea characteristics without overpowering its delicate nature.
