With a specific and refined mash bill of 70% Kentucky grown corn, 21% wheat and 9% malted barley combined with brand new American oak casks, a well rounded full flavoured bourbon awaits. Aromatics of dark toffee, assorted stone fruits and soft cooking spice lead to a palate of raw honey, flaky pastry and crushed walnut. The finish has an oaky frame which lingers alongside malt and vanilla bean. It’s no wonder this was voted the *World's best whiskey* at the 2025 New York International Spirits Competition!**

Frequently Asked Questions

Wheated bourbons like Green River substitute wheat for rye in their mash bill, creating a softer, smoother profile compared to traditional rye-heavy bourbons. This wheat component contributes to the prominent banana, caramel, and toffee flavours, as wheat tends to produce more mellow, sweet characteristics during fermentation and ageing. The result is a full-bodied whiskey that's often considered more approachable than its spicier rye counterparts, making it an excellent choice for both newcomers and seasoned bourbon enthusiasts.

Green River's recent accolades, including World's Best Bourbon at the 2025 New York World Spirits Competition, reflect their mastery of traditional Kentucky distilling techniques refined over nearly 140 years. Their position as the 10th oldest licensed distillery in Kentucky gives them access to time-tested recipes and ageing processes that many newer distilleries lack. The combination of their wheated mash bill expertise and prime Kentucky location creates optimal conditions for developing the complex caramel and toffee notes that judges consistently recognise.

As the westernmost stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, Green River Distillery serves as both a geographical anchor and historical cornerstone of the bourbon tourism experience. Established in 1885, it represents nearly a century and a half of continuous bourbon-making tradition, offering visitors insight into how classic wheated bourbon techniques have evolved. The distillery's location makes it an essential pilgrimage site for bourbon enthusiasts seeking to understand the full spectrum of Kentucky's whiskey heritage.

The distinctive banana flavours in Green River's wheated bourbon emerge from specific ester compounds formed during fermentation and enhanced through barrel ageing. Wheat-based mash bills tend to produce more fruity esters than rye-based recipes, and when combined with Kentucky's temperature fluctuations during maturation, these compounds concentrate into the recognisable banana character. This natural flavour development, alongside the caramel and toffee from charred oak interaction, creates the complex fruit-forward profile that distinguishes quality wheated bourbons.

Green River's full-bodied profile and award-winning quality make it exceptionally versatile for both neat sipping and cocktail crafting. The prominent caramel and toffee notes shine when served neat or with a splash of water, while the banana undertones add complexity to classic bourbon cocktails like Old Fashioneds or Boulevardiers. The wheated mash bill's inherent smoothness means it won't overpower delicate cocktail ingredients, yet maintains enough character to stand up to bold mixers and garnishes.
