This is a discontinued part of history. In 2008, when Glenglassaugh first fired up the long dormant stills, the whisky being produced was picked up by many blenders for it outstanding quality. This flagship was the first malt widely available after the restart, and quickly cemented Glenglassaugh as a force to be reckoned with. Matured in a complex union of red wine and bourbon casks before a finish in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts; this 46% ABV coastal dram offers a teasing nose of sponge cake and fresh oak, leading to a crisp, delicious palate of caramelised fruits, almond, and cream biscuits, all balanced by a zesty, sea-kissed finish.

Why do we love this whisky?

Situated on the rugged coast of northern Speyside, Glenglassaugh is a distillery defined by a dramatic history of silence and rebirth. Mothballed in 1986 after decades of fueling famous blends like Cutty Sark, the distillery lay dormant until its triumphant resurrection in 2008. It quickly proved that the sleeping giant had lost none of its power, with initial releases of rare 30 and 40-year-old stocks sweeping gold medals and trophies at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, instantly re-establishing its reputation for excellence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Glenglassaugh Revival represents a remarkable comeback story from Scotland's northern Speyside coast. After lying dormant for 22 years following its 1986 closure, the distillery's 2008 revival proved that time hadn't diminished its exceptional character. The coastal location imparts a distinctive maritime influence that sets it apart from inland Speyside distilleries, while its medium-bodied profile with honey, malty, and marmalade notes showcases the classic Speyside elegance that originally made it sought-after for premium blends like Cutty Sark.

Glenglassaugh was mothballed in 1986 during a challenging period for the Scotch whisky industry when many distilleries faced economic pressures and oversupply issues. For decades prior to closure, much of its production was allocated to famous blended whiskies like Cutty Sark rather than being bottled as single malt. The 22-year silence ended in 2008 when new ownership recognised the distillery's potential, leading to its triumphant resurrection and immediate success with gold medal-winning releases.

This Revival expression delivers a beautifully balanced medium-bodied experience with honey sweetness at its core, complemented by rich malty character and distinctive marmalade notes. The coastal Speyside location contributes subtle maritime influences that add complexity beyond the primary flavours. These tasting notes reflect the distillery's traditional production methods and the influence of its seaside environment, creating a whisky that's both approachable for newcomers and satisfying for experienced drinkers seeking classic Speyside character.

Glenglassaugh Revival has earned impressive recognition with gold medals from both the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Wine & Spirit Competition, each awarding it 90 points. These accolades are particularly significant given the distillery's recent revival, demonstrating that the quality and character that made Glenglassaugh valuable for premium blends translates beautifully to single malt bottlings. The consistent gold medal performance across major international competitions validates the distillery's successful return to form.

Absolutely - Glenglassaugh Revival's medium-bodied profile and approachable flavour combination of honey, malt, and marmalade makes it an excellent introduction to Speyside single malts. The honey sweetness provides immediate appeal while the malty backbone offers complexity without overwhelming intensity. Its award-winning quality ensures you're experiencing a proper representation of what makes Speyside whiskies so beloved, while the fascinating revival story adds an engaging narrative to your tasting experience.
