From Glenglassaugh's range of signature coastal malts, comes the richly peated Portsoy. Named after the neighbouring ancient fishing village and housed in a beautiful ripple-effect glass bottle. Deep amber in hue due to maturation in sherry, bourbon and port casks. The nose delivers a sweet/salty umami hit of maritime seaspray, salted caramel, charred pineapple and dried fruits accompanied by soft, sweet gentle peat smoke. On the palate the enticing balance between peat and sweetness is exemplary, and makes this dram feel like a hug in a glencairn.

Why do we love this whisky?

Glenglassaugh, has a long history, with the first stones laid in 1875, it's seen several changes of hands and has experienced almost as many periods of dormancy. Some feared it would never reopen, yet in 2008, the distillery reawakened. Then, in 2023, it revamped itself again, releasing a brand new core range of three single malts, 12 year old, Sandend and Portsoy, all produced under the expert direction of master blender Rachel Barrie.

Barrie, who also put her talents as Master Blender towards The GlenDronach and BenRiach, says, “It’s impossible to separate Glenglassaugh the whisky from Glenglassaugh the place. The lush sweetness of this coastal single malt is a complete distillation of its natural surroundings. Its whole essence is created by both the visible and invisible influences of land, sea, air and spring water.” ...well, we're not one to argue with the Master, after all, the Portsoy, sure is a whisky that speaks to its location of origin impeccably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Glenglassaugh Portsoy is part of the distillery's remarkable comeback story, having been dormant for years before reopening in 2008 and launching this new core range in 2023. Under master blender Rachel Barrie's expert guidance, this coastal single malt captures the essence of its seaside location through the interplay of land, sea air, and local spring water. The result is a distinctly Scottish expression that embodies both the distillery's resilient heritage and its modern renaissance.

The flavour profile creates a beautifully balanced progression that showcases classic Highland characteristics. The malty foundation provides the essential cereal backbone typical of quality single malts, while the raisin notes add dried fruit complexity that suggests careful maturation in quality oak casks. The toffee elements bring rich sweetness and depth, likely developed through the interaction between the spirit and wood over time, creating a harmonious medium-bodied dram that's both approachable and sophisticated.

These prestigious awards from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and International Wine & Spirit Competition represent recognition from some of the industry's most respected judges. Both competitions are known for their rigorous blind tasting processes, where whiskies are evaluated purely on merit without brand influence. The Double Gold particularly indicates unanimous agreement among judges that this is an exceptional expression, validating Glenglassaugh's successful return to form under Rachel Barrie's direction.

Rachel Barrie is one of Scotland's most accomplished master blenders, also responsible for crafting expressions at The GlenDronach and BenRiach distilleries. Her expertise lies in understanding how environmental factors influence whisky character, which is particularly evident in her philosophy that Glenglassaugh cannot be separated from its coastal location. Her involvement in the 2023 relaunch represents a commitment to quality and authenticity, ensuring this new core range honours both the distillery's heritage and its unique terroir.

NV stands for 'Non-Vintage', indicating this whisky is crafted from a blend of different aged stocks rather than from a single year's production. This approach allows the master blender to maintain consistent flavour profiles across batches while optimising the marriage of different cask types and ages. For Glenglassaugh Portsoy, this technique enables Rachel Barrie to showcase the distillery's house style while ensuring each bottle delivers the same quality experience that earned those international medals.
