Matured in a unique combination of hand-picked ex-Tennessee first-fill whiskey barrels, “Evolution” strikes a highly sought-after equilibrium in dry-sweetness. Pure golden hues lean into beeswax, chocolate, vanilla and warming cinnamon/gingerbread spice, lifted by tangy tropical fruits, and wrapping up medium and dry, with lingering spiced toffee. Overall, an impeccably balanced single malt whisky

Why do we love this whisky?

Glenglassaugh boasts a solid 127 years of operation on the north coast of Speyside, home to the two most world renowned single malt distillers, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. So it is fair to say that they’ve been around the block a couple times! Founded in 1875, shutting shop for a brief hiatus in 1986, and reopening in 2008 brings us through their apt “Revival” range to their exceptional “Evolution” range. Negating the highly automated practices used by the masses, and opting instead for a small, highly skilled team, Glenglassaugh have used ex-George Dickel Tennessee Whiskey first-fill barrels to carefully handcraft a single malt that exudes quality and authenticity.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Glenglassaugh shares the prestigious Speyside region with giants like Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Evolution stands apart through its unique maturation in ex-George Dickel Tennessee whiskey barrels. This American influence creates an intriguing cross-cultural flavour profile that bridges Scottish tradition with Tennessee character. The distillery's commitment to small-batch, handcrafted production using a skilled team rather than automation ensures each bottle maintains exceptional quality and authenticity.

The distinctive banana and green apple notes in Glenglassaugh Evolution stem from the interaction between the spirit and ex-Tennessee whiskey barrels during maturation. Tennessee whiskey barrels often impart fruity esters and compounds that develop these specific flavours over time. The banana notes typically come from isoamyl acetate compounds, while the green apple character develops from acetaldehyde interactions, creating a fresh, orchard-like quality that's enhanced by the caramel sweetness from the charred oak.

Evolution represents Glenglassaugh's progression from their earlier 'Revival' range, marking the distillery's journey since reopening in 2008 after a 22-year closure. This range showcases the distillery's maturation and refinement of their craft, moving beyond simply reviving production to evolving their whisky-making techniques. The Evolution series demonstrates how the distillery has grown in confidence and skill, experimenting with different cask types like the Tennessee whiskey barrels to create more complex and innovative expressions.

The medium-bodied nature of Glenglassaugh Evolution creates an ideal balance between accessibility and complexity, making it versatile for both neat sipping and cocktail mixing. This weight allows the banana, caramel, and green apple flavours to develop gradually on the palate without overwhelming the senses, while providing enough substance to carry the Tennessee barrel influences effectively. Medium-bodied whiskies like this often serve as excellent bridges for those transitioning from lighter spirits to more robust expressions.

The consecutive silver medals from 2014 and 2017 demonstrate consistent quality and recognition from one of the industry's most respected judging panels. These awards indicate that Glenglassaugh Evolution not only meets high international standards but has maintained that excellence over multiple years of production. The competition evaluates whiskies against global benchmarks, so these medals position Evolution as a serious contender among premium single malts, validating the distillery's innovative approach to Tennessee barrel maturation.
