Why do we love this whisky?

Glendronach distillery hails from Speyside in the Scottish Highlands and was established way back in 1826 by a fellow by the name of James Allardice, making it one of the first licensed distilleries in Scotland. Glendronach prides itself on its unique use of high quality Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks specifically sourced from Andalucia in the south of Spain. For those of you playing at home, ‘Glendronach’ is Scottish Gaelic and translates to ‘valley of the brambles’.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Traditionally Peated expression marks a departure from Glendronach's typical unpeated style, harking back to the distillery's 19th-century roots when peat was commonly used in Scottish whisky production. The smoky character combines beautifully with Glendronach's signature sherry cask maturation, creating a unique marriage of peat smoke with the rich, fruity sweetness from Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso casks. This offers whisky enthusiasts a rare glimpse into how Speyside whiskies might have tasted in James Allardice's era when the distillery was founded in 1826.

The Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucia work as a counterpoint to the peat smoke, adding layers of dried fruit sweetness and honeyed richness that soften the smoky intensity. This creates a more approachable peated whisky compared to heavily peated Islay expressions, where the sherry influence provides a luxurious backdrop that allows both the smoke and fruit flavours to shine without overwhelming each other. The result is a sophisticated balance that appeals to both peat lovers and those who typically prefer sherried whiskies.

Beyond its Gold Medal recognition at the International Wine & Spirits Competition, this whisky represents exceptional craftsmanship through Glendronach's meticulous cask selection process and their commitment to traditional maturation methods. The distillery's exclusive use of hand-selected Spanish sherry casks, combined with their patient approach to aging without chill filtration or artificial colouring, creates a whisky of remarkable depth and authenticity. As one of Scotland's first licensed distilleries, Glendronach's heritage and expertise in sherry cask maturation places this expression among the finest examples of Highland single malt craftsmanship.

The smoky, fruity profile makes this whisky exceptional with rich, savoury dishes like slow-cooked lamb with rosemary or aged beef with caramelised onions, where the peat smoke complements the char while the sherry sweetness balances the meat's richness. Dark chocolate desserts or fruit-based puddings also work beautifully, as the honey notes bridge the gap between the whisky's complexity and the dessert's sweetness. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, where the whisky's medium body and smoky character can stand up to strong flavours while the fruit notes provide pleasant contrast.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the complex interplay between peat smoke, sherry sweetness, and honeyed fruit flavours. A few drops of room-temperature water can help open up the whisky's aromatics, particularly revealing more of the underlying fruit character beneath the smoke. While this whisky's medium body and balanced profile make it approachable for newcomers to peated whiskies, taking time to nose the spirit before tasting allows you to experience the full spectrum of aromas that Glendronach's traditional maturation methods have developed.
