Why do we love this whisky?

The single malt of choice here is Scottish barley which is intelligently used alongside that unique Oloroso flavour and good old fashioned time. Aromatics of flaky dark chocolate, exotic cooking spices and toasted nuts open up to a palate championed by dried fruits and warm mocha. It finishes long and lively with hits of zesty citrus, wood char and deep, dark toffee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The extended 28-year maturation allows the Scottish barley spirit to develop extraordinary complexity through decades of interaction with Oloroso sherry casks. This lengthy aging process transforms the whisky's character, creating layers of dried fruits, exotic spices, and deep toffee notes that simply cannot be achieved in younger expressions. The cask strength bottling preserves the full intensity of these mature flavours without dilution.

Cask strength bottling captures the whisky exactly as it emerges from the barrel after 28 years, typically around 50-60% ABV, preserving maximum flavour intensity and allowing you to control dilution yourself. This approach maintains the full spectrum of aromatics from dark chocolate to exotic spices, giving enthusiasts the authentic distillery experience. You can add water gradually to find your preferred strength while retaining the whisky's natural oils and complex character.

Oloroso sherry casks are crucial to Glendronach's signature style, imparting rich dried fruit characteristics like apricot and fig, along with nutty complexity and deep amber colour. These Spanish oak barrels previously held oxidatively aged sherry, leaving behind concentrated flavours that slowly integrate with the Scottish barley spirit over decades. The result is the distinctive mocha, toffee, and exotic spice notes that define this expression.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the aromatic complexity of dark chocolate, toasted nuts, and exotic spices. Given the cask strength, consider adding a few drops of water to open up the flavours and reveal hidden citrus notes in the finish. Allow the whisky to rest in the glass for 10-15 minutes, as the high alcohol content needs time to settle and reveal its layered character.

The rich dried fruit and mocha characteristics pair beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, aged cheeses like Stilton or aged Gouda, and roasted nuts. The exotic spice notes make it an excellent companion to slow-cooked lamb or venison, while the long, citrusy finish cleanses the palate after rich foods. For a classic pairing, try it alongside traditional Scottish shortbread or fruit cake to echo the whisky's own biscuity and dried fruit elements.
