Why do we love this whisky?

The Dalmore, a Highland heavyweight since 1839, doesn’t rest on its laurels. Through Quintet, master blender Gregg Glass splits bourbon-matured malt across five rare casks: Muscatel and Malmsey Madeira (floral, honey notes), 30 year Matusalem Sherry (dark fruit and chocolate), 10 year Port (red berries), and Bordeaux cabernet (tannic structure). It’s the distillery’s nod to bold experimentation, marrying tradition with a wink to wine lovers, all while upholding the luxury benchmark set by icons like the King Alexander III 14.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Quintet's five-cask approach represents a masterclass in flavour layering, where each vessel contributes distinct characteristics that wouldn't exist in isolation. The Muscatel and Malmsey Madeira casks bring Mediterranean floral elegance, while the 30-year Matusalem Sherry adds profound depth through oxidative ageing. The Port and Bordeaux casks introduce berry complexity and tannic structure respectively, creating a whisky that bridges the gap between traditional Scotch and wine appreciation.

While Dalmore's flagship King Alexander III showcases the distillery's house style through six different casks, the Quintet takes a more focused approach with five carefully selected wine and fortified wine casks. This creates a more wine-forward profile compared to Dalmore's traditional sherry-heavy expressions. The medium body and experimental nature position it as an accessible entry point into Dalmore's premium range, offering complexity without the intensity of their older, more expensive bottlings.

The wine cask influence makes this particularly food-friendly, especially with dishes that echo its maturation vessels. Dark chocolate desserts complement the Matusalem Sherry notes, while the Port influence pairs beautifully with blue cheese or rich game meats. The tropical fruit and honey characteristics work surprisingly well with spiced Middle Eastern cuisine or even a quality charcuterie board featuring dried fruits and nuts.

Absolutely - the Quintet's wine cask maturation creates familiar flavour bridges for those transitioning from wine to whisky. The medium body prevents overwhelming intensity, while the honey and tropical fruit notes provide approachable sweetness. The Gold Medal recognition from the International Wine & Spirit Competition validates its quality, making it a confident choice for gifting or personal exploration without the intimidation factor of heavily peated or cask-strength expressions.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the complex interplay between the five cask influences. Add a few drops of water if desired - this opens up the wine cask characteristics and allows the Madeira's floral notes to emerge more prominently. The coffee and honey elements develop beautifully over 10-15 minutes in the glass, so resist the urge to rush. Avoid ice, which would mute the delicate wine cask nuances that make this expression unique.
