This super limited 20-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey has, as the name suggests, spent twice the amount of time maturing than the standard Eagle Rare 10-year-old bourbon, and is aged on the lower floors of Buffalo Trace’s historic Frankfort warehouses, ensuring reduced evaporation rates. The glistening golden amber liquid is bottled at the original 1975 101 proof, and also comes in an exquisite limited edition decanter featuring two beautifully-sculpted crystal glass eagles and presented in a luxurious silver box, it is as much a work of art as it is a whiskey. With only a handful of bottles produced, each accompanied by a numbered letter of authenticity, this release stands as a true collector’s treasure.

Why do we love this whisky?

Even with two whole decades spent maturing in oak, this spectacular special edition bourbon is surprisingly balanced. Hints of vanilla, toasted oak and caramel lead to a gracefully-aged oaky flavour. It is truly like nothing you’ve ever tasted before, mofo. Kris Comstock, senior marketing director for Eagle Rare, explains, "We’ve been waiting for this whiskey to mature for years. Even after two decades, these barrel are surprisingly balanced. Hints of vanilla, toasted oak and caramel lead to a gracefully aged oaky flavour. We worked on the packaging for more than two years, and finally settled on what we think is a beautiful decanter inside an eye catching, yet tastefully decorated box. Something that anyone would be proud to display on their bar. And it tastes even better than it looks."

Frequently Asked Questions

Two decades of maturation in oak barrels creates an extraordinary depth of complexity that younger bourbons simply cannot achieve. The extended aging allows the spirit to develop sophisticated layers of vanilla, toasted oak, and caramel whilst maintaining remarkable balance - a feat that's particularly impressive given bourbon's tendency to become overly woody with extreme age. This Double Eagle represents the pinnacle of Buffalo Trace's aging expertise, showcasing how patient maturation can transform raw spirit into liquid gold.

Achieving balance in ultra-aged bourbon requires exceptional barrel selection and precise warehouse management over two decades. Buffalo Trace's master distillers carefully monitor each barrel's development, selecting only those that maintain harmony between wood influence and the underlying bourbon character. The Kentucky climate's seasonal temperature variations help the whiskey breathe in and out of the oak, extracting flavours gradually rather than aggressively, preventing the harsh over-oaking that can plague extended-age spirits.

This exceptional bourbon has earned Gold Medals at both the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition and American Whiskey Masters, with scores of 90 points each. These competitions represent the industry's most rigorous blind tastings, where spirits are judged purely on merit by expert panels including master distillers, sommeliers, and spirits writers. Gold medals at this level indicate the bourbon stands among the world's finest aged spirits, competing successfully against premium expressions from across the globe.

Creating packaging worthy of a 20-year-old bourbon requires balancing luxury presentation with respect for the liquid inside. Buffalo Trace invested extensive time developing a beautiful decanter housed in an eye-catching yet tastefully decorated box that reflects the whiskey's premium status without appearing ostentatious. The packaging serves as both protection for this rare spirit and a display piece that honours the decades of craftsmanship, making it suitable for gifting or showcasing in a home bar collection.

This full-bodied bourbon delivers a sophisticated palate journey beginning with elegant hints of vanilla and toasted oak, evolving into rich caramel, stewed fruits, and toffee notes. The 20-year maturation creates a gracefully-aged oaky flavour that's complex yet harmonious, avoiding the bitter tannins that can overwhelm lesser aged spirits. The full-bodied nature means each sip coats the palate with luxurious texture, delivering waves of flavour that continue to evolve and reveal new nuances with each taste.
