Why do we love this whisky?

In the early 19th century, Octomore was a thriving distillery producing enviable Islay malts of incredible quality. This series of whiskies by Bruichladdich, started in 2008, is a nod to the once great producer, made from malt grown on the Octomore lands for the first time in over 160 years. Each release has been a bit different, but with a couple of similarities: 5 years in ex-Bourbon, and peated to the max.

Frequently Asked Questions

Octomore represents Bruichladdich's exploration of extreme peat levels, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in whisky making. While most peated Islay whiskies range from 25-55 PPM (parts per million phenols), Octomore releases typically exceed 100 PPM, making them among the most heavily peated whiskies in the world. This intense peat character is balanced by the distillery's precise distillation techniques and careful cask selection, creating complexity rather than just overwhelming smoke.

The 5-year maturation period for Octomore is intentional and reflects Bruichladdich's philosophy that age isn't everything in whisky making. The extreme peat levels and cask strength bottling create such intensity that longer ageing could actually diminish the whisky's character. The ex-bourbon barrels allow the spirit's natural oils and phenolic compounds to shine through while adding complementary vanilla and toffee notes, proving that exceptional whisky can be achieved through quality over quantity of years.

Octomore was once a real distillery that operated in the early 19th century on Islay, producing highly regarded single malts before closing. Bruichladdich's Octomore series, launched in 2008, pays homage to this lost distillery by using barley grown on the actual Octomore farm lands for the first time in over 160 years. This connection between historical terroir and modern distillation techniques creates a unique link to Islay's whisky heritage while pushing contemporary boundaries.

Cask strength whiskies like this Octomore 13.1 require a thoughtful approach to fully appreciate their complexity. Start with small sips neat to experience the full intensity, then gradually add drops of water to unlock different flavour layers - the smoky peat will remain dominant, but you'll discover the underlying toffee and vanilla notes from the bourbon cask maturation. The full-bodied palate weight means this whisky can handle dilution while maintaining its character, allowing you to find your preferred strength.

While Bruichladdich is known for producing both unpeated and lightly peated whiskies, the Octomore series represents their most extreme expression in terms of peat levels and intensity. Unlike their classic Bruichladdich or Port Charlotte ranges, Octomore pushes every element to the maximum - heaviest peat, cask strength bottling, and bold flavour profiles. This makes it a completely different drinking experience that showcases the distillery's technical capabilities and willingness to challenge conventional whisky wisdom.
