Bladnoch 14 is a warm invitation to the Scottish lowlands with layers of rich dried fruit, festive spice and baked chocolate, nuanced by soft florals and citrus. Complexity that combines lushness without sacrificing backbone - never loud or brash, serious enough to impress, yet spirited enough to enjoy without pretence.

Why do we love this whisky?

Historically known as the “Queen of the Lowlands”, Bladnoch stands apart as the southernmost distillery in Scotland... From its origins on a working farm in 1817, through periods of dormancy and rebirth, to present day being the first Australian owned Scotch whisky distillery under the stewardship of entrepreneur David Prior, who has, with the guidance of Master Distiller Dr. Nick Savage, meticulously restored Bladnoch to its original vision: producing light, elegant, and nuanced Lowland whiskies. This 14 year old embodies that revival, marrying the gentle Lowland style with depth and character from aging exclusively in carefully selected ex-Oloroso casks. Honouring the distilleries classic roots, while embracing a modern standard of excellence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bladnoch holds the distinction of being Scotland's southernmost distillery and is famously known as the 'Queen of the Lowlands'. What's particularly remarkable is that it's the first Australian-owned Scotch whisky distillery, acquired by entrepreneur David Prior who has meticulously restored it to produce the light, elegant style that defines Lowland whiskies. This unique combination of geographic location, historical significance, and modern Australian stewardship creates a truly distinctive whisky experience.

Ex-Oloroso sherry casks are prized in whisky maturation for their ability to impart rich, nutty sweetness and dried fruit complexity. The 14-year aging exclusively in these carefully selected casks explains the whisky's chocolate and toffee notes, while the orange peel character likely comes from the citrus oils absorbed from the sherry wood. This cask selection perfectly complements Bladnoch's naturally light Lowland character, adding depth without overwhelming the distillery's signature elegance.

Lowland whiskies are traditionally known for their light, gentle character, so a medium-bodied expression from this region represents excellent balance and maturity. This weight suggests the 14-year maturation has developed substantial mouthfeel and complexity while retaining the approachable, nuanced style that makes Lowland whiskies perfect for both newcomers and connoisseurs. The medium body allows the chocolate, toffee, and orange peel flavours to be well-integrated rather than overpowering.

The Gold Medal recognition with a 90-point score reflects the exceptional quality achieved through Bladnoch's revival under Master Distiller Dr. Nick Savage's guidance. The award likely recognises how successfully this expression balances traditional Lowland elegance with the rich complexity from ex-Oloroso cask maturation. World Whiskies Awards judges would have appreciated the whisky's ability to honour classic Scottish distilling traditions while meeting modern standards of excellence, showcasing the distillery's successful renaissance.

To fully experience the chocolate, toffee, and orange peel notes, serve this whisky neat at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass to concentrate the aromas. The medium body means it can handle a few drops of water to open up additional complexity from the ex-Oloroso casks. Given its elegant Lowland character, this whisky pairs beautifully with dark chocolate or citrus-based desserts, where the orange peel notes can complement rather than compete with food flavours.
