Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this whisky?

The whisky from these four casks (ex-bourbon, virgin oak, ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry, and ex-Bordeaux red) has been expertly married together by the Benriach Master Blender to create a multi-faceted and perfectly balanced malt, with each cask type adding its own unique characteristics to the experience. During the extra-long, multi-layered cask maturation, Benriach’s sweet Speyside smoke mellows and elegantly integrates with the layered signature sweet barley malt, toasted pine and orchard fruit-laden style and develops into an elegant honey smoke. The influence of the various cask types on this divine dram is also evident on the long satisfying honeyed pear finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

The extended 21-year maturation allows Benriach's signature sweet Speyside smoke to mellow and integrate beautifully with the barley malt character. This lengthy aging process transforms the initial robust flavours into an elegant honey smoke profile, whilst the four different cask types contribute layers of complexity that simply cannot be achieved in younger expressions. The result is a sophisticated balance where time has harmonised all elements into a cohesive, multi-dimensional whisky.

Each cask type contributes distinct characteristics - ex-bourbon barrels provide vanilla and honey notes, virgin oak adds toasted pine and spice, Pedro Ximenez sherry casks contribute rich sweetness and dark fruit complexity, whilst ex-Bordeaux red wine barrels impart subtle tannins and berry nuances. The Master Blender's expertise lies in marrying these diverse influences to create a harmonious whole, where no single cask dominates but each adds its unique signature to the final expression.

The whisky's medium body and complex flavour profile of dark chocolate, orange, and redcurrant makes it versatile for pairing. It complements rich desserts like chocolate tart or crème brûlée, whilst the honeyed pear finish pairs beautifully with aged cheeses or fruit-based desserts. The smoky elements also work well with grilled meats or charcuterie, and the orange notes create an excellent match with dark chocolate or citrus-infused dishes.

Whilst this is a premium 21-year-old expression, the mellowed Speyside smoke and balanced sweetness make it approachable for those new to peated whiskies. The honey and fruit characteristics provide an accessible entry point, whilst the complexity from four cask types offers layers that experienced whisky enthusiasts can explore and appreciate. However, beginners might want to start with younger, less complex expressions before investing in this level of sophistication.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the aromatic complexity and layered flavours. Adding a few drops of water can open up additional flavours and reduce any alcohol heat, allowing the honeyed pear finish to shine through more prominently. Avoid ice as it will mute the delicate balance achieved through 21 years of maturation and the careful marriage of four different cask influences.
