Why do we love this tequila?

We actually couldn't believe our luck when we were able to secure some of this incredibly highly-regarded (and insanely delicious) añejo tequila from one of the world's best producers. This drop spends 25 months in high-quality American oak barrels, and the result is a tequila that holds its own against the smoothest whiskies. Rich, silky vanilla and toffee notes paired with slow cooked highland agave and rich spices. Holy moly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Añejo tequila represents the premium category of tequila production, requiring a minimum of one year aging in oak barrels. This Herradura spends 25 months in American oak, which transforms the raw agave spirit into something remarkably smooth and complex. The extended barrel aging develops rich vanilla and toffee notes while mellowing the agave's natural intensity, creating a sipping spirit that rivals fine whisky in sophistication.

Premium añejo tequilas like this Herradura are best enjoyed neat at room temperature in a snifter or rocks glass to appreciate their complex aromatics. The 25-month oak aging has created a spirit smooth enough to sip slowly without mixers, allowing you to experience the interplay between highland agave and American oak. If you prefer it chilled, a single large ice cube will open up the flavours without over-diluting this exceptional spirit.

The rich vanilla and spice notes from American oak aging make this añejo incredibly food-friendly, particularly with grilled meats, dark chocolate desserts, and aged cheeses. The caramel and cinnamon flavours complement barbecued beef or lamb beautifully, while the underlying agave character pairs naturally with Mexican cuisine featuring mole sauces. For dessert, try it alongside flan or chocolate truffles to echo the toffee notes developed during barrel aging.

Herradura has been crafting tequila since 1870 and is credited with creating the añejo category itself, aging their first barrels in the 1960s. Their commitment to traditional production methods, including slow-cooking highland agave in clay ovens and using natural fermentation, sets them apart from mass producers. The World Drink Awards recognition as Best Tequila reflects their consistent quality and innovation in elevating tequila from a party spirit to a sophisticated sipping experience.

Highland agave from Jalisco's mountainous regions develops different characteristics than lowland varieties due to the cooler climate and volcanic soil. These agaves grow more slowly and develop higher sugar content, creating a sweeter, more complex base for tequila production. The highland terroir contributes to this Herradura's fruity undertones and natural richness, which harmonises beautifully with the vanilla and spice notes acquired during the 25-month American oak aging process.
