Three very different rums from three different locations across the globe have been combined to make up this beguiling blend. Barbados, Mauritius and Fiji rums are expertly blended to produce a standout drop greater than the sum of its parts. At first, the nose is all things fresh, grassy and herbal, but it's not long before the sweeter flavours of pineapple, orange, toffee and brown banana join in the aromatic party. Upon sipping, you're treated to a smooth and full palate of sweet christmas spices, salted caramel, and clover honey with a lusciously lingering finish.

Why do we love this rum?

A fantastic fusion of rum-making traditions from the Atlantic, South Pacific, and Indian Oceans. To start, there's the sweet fruitiness of Barbadian molasses-based pot and column still spirits, aged for up to eight years on the island in ex-bourbon casks. Then there's the smokiness of the Fijian molasses-based column still spirit. The molasses here comes from heritage sugar cane and is aged in charred oak barrels for five years. Finally, there's an unmistakable freshness from unaged Mauritian column still spirit, made in the style of a rhum agricole, i.e. cane juice instead of molasses, which emphasises terroir and provides grassy, herbal flavours in the rum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plantation Sealander is a unique tri-ocean blend that combines rum-making traditions from three distinct maritime regions. It marries aged Barbadian molasses spirits (up to 8 years in ex-bourbon casks), smoky Fijian column still rum aged 5 years in charred oak, and fresh unaged Mauritian cane juice spirit made in the agricole style. This fusion creates complexity impossible to achieve from a single distillery or region.

The unaged Mauritian component serves as the 'brightness' that balances the deeper, aged flavours from Barbados and Fiji. Made from fresh cane juice rather than molasses, it contributes grassy, herbal notes that emphasise terroir and prevent the blend from becoming overly heavy or sweet. This technique mirrors how master blenders use younger spirits to add vibrancy and lift to aged expressions.

You'll experience layers of apple, honey, and toffee that reflect the diverse production methods. The Barbadian component provides classic molasses sweetness and vanilla from ex-bourbon barrels, while the Fijian element adds distinctive smokiness from charred oak aging. The Mauritian agricole-style spirit brings fresh, grassy notes that cut through the richness and add complexity to each sip.

This award specifically recognises spirits that excel in cocktail applications, making it particularly relevant for bartenders and mixologists. The 90-point score indicates exceptional quality and suggests the rum's complex flavour profile works brilliantly both neat and in mixed drinks. Bartender-focused awards often emphasise balance, versatility, and how well a spirit integrates with other ingredients.

Molasses-based rums (like the Barbadian and Fijian components) are made from the byproduct of sugar refining, typically producing richer, sweeter flavours with notes of caramel and vanilla. Cane juice rums, or rhum agricole (like the Mauritian component), are distilled directly from fresh sugar cane juice, creating more vegetal, grassy, and terroir-driven characteristics. This blend showcases both styles in harmony.
