Here we have the Barbados 1986 35 Year Old rum, the pièce de résistance from the fifth edition of Plantation's Extreme Collection, which highlights the craftsmanship of the legendary West Indies Rum Distillery, and the magical effects of Plantation’s signature double-ageing process. 1986 also happens to be a very special year for Plantation, as the brand's first bottling was also a Barbados 1986! Aged for an almost unheard of 34 years in bourbon barrels and finished for a further year in a single 350L Maison Ferrand cognac cask, this was bottled at its natural cask strength. This is an ultra rare, seriously limited piece of WIRD & Platation's history, with only 286 bottles ever produced for this one-off masterpiece.

Why do we love this rum?

Established in Barbados on the white sands of Brighton beach, across from the turquoise Caribbean sea, the West Indies Rum Distillery was founded in 1893. Now owned by Alexandre Gabriel, owner and Master Blender of Plantation Rum, Gabriel draws endless inspiration from the historical archives of WIRD that stretch back over 125 years.

Intense, remarkably rich tropical fruit aromas of mango, orange peel, and passionfruit are delicately underscored by vanilla, spicy touches of anise, and hints of juicy peach. The palate is equally spicy and fruity; papaya, peach, mango and passionfruit once again making an appearance. Savoury notes of black olive, ginger, and cardamom add further complexity to the spice-laden fruit-forward profile, which develops a decadent depth as it morphs into liquorice, black tea, apricot and roasted pineapple, lightened by flickers of mint on the long finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

This extraordinary 35-year maturation period allows the rum to develop incredible complexity through decades of interaction with oak barrels in Barbados' tropical climate. The extended ageing creates a sophisticated interplay between intense tropical fruit flavours and deep savoury notes like black olive and cardamom that simply cannot be achieved in younger spirits. The angel's share evaporation in the Caribbean heat concentrates the remaining liquid, resulting in a remarkably rich and full-bodied profile that showcases the pinnacle of Caribbean rum craftsmanship.

Founded in 1893 on Brighton beach in Barbados, WIRD brings over 125 years of rum-making heritage to this expression. Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel draws from the distillery's extensive historical archives to inform his blending decisions, ensuring traditional Barbadian rum-making techniques are preserved while pushing boundaries. This deep institutional knowledge, combined with the distillery's prime coastal location where Caribbean sea breezes influence maturation, creates a rum that embodies both historical authenticity and modern excellence.

The rum's intense tropical fruit character and savoury spice complexity make it exceptional with dark chocolate desserts, particularly those featuring mango or passion fruit elements. The black olive and cardamom notes create surprising harmony with aged cheeses or charcuterie, while the liquorice and black tea development pairs beautifully with espresso-based desserts. For a truly elevated experience, try it alongside grilled pineapple with cinnamon or a rich fruit cake where the rum's apricot and roasted pineapple notes can shine.

This exceptional rum deserves to be savoured neat at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass or snifter to concentrate the complex aromatics. Allow it to breathe for 10-15 minutes after pouring to let the volatile compounds settle and reveal the full spectrum of tropical fruits and spices. A single ice cube can be added if preferred, but avoid over-chilling as this will mute the delicate mint finish and intricate flavour development that makes this 35-year expression so remarkable.

Barbadian rum is renowned for its elegant balance and refined character, often considered the most sophisticated style in the Caribbean. The island's coral limestone naturally filters the water used in production, while the consistent tropical climate provides ideal maturation conditions without extreme temperature fluctuations. This WIRD expression exemplifies the Barbadian style with its harmonious blend of intense fruit flavours and complex spice notes, showcasing how the island's terroir and traditional pot still distillation methods create rums of exceptional depth and finesse.
