Why do we love this rum?

True to its Spanish origins, Dictador 12 is a solera method rum, where what's in the bottle averages around 12 years of age.

So what is Solera? Solera is a fractional blending system, originating in Spain. This method ensures consistent quality and flavour over time by mixing liquids of different ages from stacked barrels, with the youngest rum in barrels at the top, cascading into increasingly older barrels below, eventually ending up with the oldest liquid at the bottom, where a portion of the liquid is drawn for bottling. After sampling the oldest barrels for bottling, they are then refilled from the tier above, creating a perpetual, complex blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

The solera method creates a perpetual blending system where rums of different ages are continuously mixed in stacked barrels, with the oldest liquid at the bottom. This Spanish technique ensures remarkable consistency and complexity, as each bottle contains a blend averaging 12 years but incorporating rums aged 8-14 years. Unlike traditional single-age spirits, solera creates a living system where older rums mentor younger ones, developing deeper, more nuanced flavours over time.

The rich caramel and treacle notes emerge from the extended barrel ageing in Colombia's tropical climate, where temperature fluctuations accelerate the interaction between rum and wood. The solera system intensifies these flavours as older, more concentrated rums blend with younger spirits, creating layers of sweetness. Colombian sugar cane's natural molasses content, combined with the country's unique terroir, produces these distinctive toffee-like characteristics that distinguish it from Caribbean rums.

The tropical fruit character comes from Colombia's unique fermentation environment and the interaction between local yeasts and sugar cane varietals. During the solera ageing process, these fruity esters concentrate and evolve, while the warm Colombian climate allows the rum to breathe through the barrel wood, picking up subtle fruit notes from the surrounding environment. The full-bodied nature of this rum carries these tropical flavours beautifully alongside the deeper barrel-aged characteristics.

These prestigious awards from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and RumXP represent blind tastings by international spirits experts, indicating exceptional quality among hundreds of entries. The 90-point scores place this rum in the 'outstanding' category, recognising its complex solera character and masterful blending. These accolades validate Dictador's traditional Spanish methods and Colombian craftsmanship, positioning it among the world's finest aged rums.

This premium solera rum is best appreciated neat or with a single ice cube to unlock its complex layers of caramel, treacle, and tropical fruit. The full-bodied character means it can stand up to gentle dilution without losing its distinctive personality. For cocktails, use it in premium applications like an elevated Old Fashioned or Rum Manhattan, where its 12-year complexity won't be masked by mixers but will add sophisticated depth to classic recipes.
