Frequently Asked Questions

H by Hine VSOP represents a deliberate departure from Hine's typically formal approach, offering a more approachable and playful expression while maintaining their exacting standards. Despite this relaxed attitude, it's still crafted exclusively from Grande and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie - the most prestigious growing regions in Cognac - making it a Fine Champagne cognac with serious pedigree. The blend incorporates over twenty different eaux-de-vie, showcasing Hine's blending expertise in a format that's designed to be less intimidating than their rare vintage offerings.

Grande and Petite Champagne are the premier crus of the Cognac region, with chalky soils that produce the finest and most age-worthy eaux-de-vie. Grande Champagne, considered the absolute pinnacle, creates spirits with exceptional finesse and longevity, while Petite Champagne offers similar quality with slightly more immediate appeal. When a cognac is made exclusively from these two regions, it earns the coveted 'Fine Champagne' designation, which this Hine VSOP proudly carries. The combination delivers both the elegance Grande Champagne is famous for and the approachable character that Petite Champagne contributes.

The leather notes indicate this cognac has developed sophisticated tertiary flavours through careful ageing and blending, suggesting a spirit with depth and complexity beyond simple fruit characteristics. Toffee flavours typically emerge from the interaction between the spirit and oak during maturation, creating rich caramelised sweetness that balances the more austere elements. Together, these tasting notes paint a picture of a well-structured VSOP that offers both immediate pleasure from the toffee sweetness and contemplative complexity from the leather undertones. This flavour profile makes it equally suited to neat sipping or as a premium base for classic cognac cocktails.

The Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition is particularly noteworthy, as this event is one of the most rigorous and respected spirits competitions globally, with judges including master distillers and industry experts. Double Gold medals are only awarded when all judges unanimously agree a spirit deserves gold, making it a rare achievement that signals exceptional quality. The additional Gold Medal from the Bartender Spirits Awards indicates this cognac performs well not just in formal tastings, but also meets the practical needs of professional bartenders who value both flavour and mixability.

VSOP stands for 'Very Superior Old Pale' and indicates that the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend has been aged for at least four years, though most components are typically much older. This ageing classification sits between VS (younger, more vibrant) and XO (older, more complex), offering an ideal balance of youthful energy and mature sophistication. At the VSOP level, you can expect well-integrated oak influence, developed fruit flavours, and enough complexity to appreciate neat, while retaining the structure needed for premium cocktails. The medium-bodied weight of this particular expression suggests it delivers substantial flavour without being overpowering.
