Why do we love this whisky?

In sourcing the finest French oak grenache wine casks in the country, Spirit Thief headed straight for the Clarendon region of the Adelaide Hills. Where the climate is reminiscent of the Mediterranean and grenache is thriving in the fertile soils of the new world. Elegant and complex, this single malt whisky exudes aromas of citrus blossom orchards and Valencia oranges from the streets of Spain. On the palate, peaches, nectarines and sugared almonds, cinnamon and white chocolate, before rounding out with five-spice, nutmeg and a hint of white pepper.

Frequently Asked Questions

The French oak grenache casks sourced from Adelaide Hills' Clarendon region impart distinctive Mediterranean characteristics to this single malt. Grenache wine casks are prized in whisky maturation because the grape's natural fruit-forward profile and lower tannin structure allows the whisky's base character to shine while adding layers of stone fruit and spice complexity. The French oak contributes elegant vanilla and spice notes that complement rather than overpower the spirit's inherent qualities.

The Clarendon region's Mediterranean-like climate creates grenache wines with bright acidity and concentrated fruit flavours that translate beautifully into whisky maturation. This terroir produces casks that previously held wines with intense peach and citrus characteristics, which explains the whisky's pronounced Valencia orange and nectarine notes. The fertile soils and climate conditions create wines with balanced tannin structures that allow for gentle, nuanced whisky finishing rather than aggressive oak extraction.

The 2023 Tokyo Whisky and Spirits Competition Gold Medal represents recognition from one of Asia's most prestigious whisky judging panels, known for their rigorous standards and appreciation of innovative cask finishing techniques. This award validates Spirit Thief's approach to using Australian wine casks for whisky maturation, a practice that's gaining international recognition. The competition particularly values whiskies that demonstrate unique regional character while maintaining exceptional quality and balance.

The 500mL format reflects this whisky's positioning as a premium, limited-release expression where smaller batches allow for greater quality control and exclusivity. Many craft distilleries choose this size for special cask finishes because it allows whisky enthusiasts to experience unique expressions without the commitment of a full 700mL bottle. This format also enables the distillery to offer more experimental and limited releases, making each bottle more collectible and allowing for better inventory management of rare cask-finished spirits.

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the citrus blossom and Valencia orange aromatics that define this expression. The medium body and fruit-forward profile make it approachable without water, though a few drops can open up the white chocolate and five-spice notes. Given the delicate cask influence from grenache, avoid over-chilling which would mute the stone fruit characteristics that make this finishing so distinctive.
