Why do we love this whisky?

This fantastic oak has only been used in whisky since WWII when shortages of imported oak forced Japanese distilleries to turn to their native, incredibly hard-to-work Mizunara trees. Not only is it notoriously tough to use, but also takes up to 200 years for trees to grow big enough to make barrels. This delicious drop is concentrated, but delicate and elegant. Fruity floral aromas atop light notes of vanilla and spices are followed by a silky palate of dark chocolate orange, sandalwood and cinnamon. This Irish/Japanese mash-up is one for the history books!

Frequently Asked Questions

Mizunara oak is one of the rarest and most challenging woods used in whiskey maturation. The trees require up to 200 years to mature enough for barrel-making, and the wood is notoriously difficult to work with due to its extreme hardness. Japanese distilleries only began using it during WWII out of necessity, but discovered it imparts unique sandalwood and spice characteristics that create an entirely different flavor profile compared to American or European oak.

This represents a fascinating fusion of two distinct whiskey-making traditions. The Irish single malt provides the smooth, approachable foundation that Ireland is known for, while the Mizunara finish adds the exotic spice and sandalwood notes characteristic of Japanese whiskey maturation. This cross-cultural approach creates complexity layers that neither tradition could achieve alone, resulting in a truly unique flavor profile that bridges continents.

The whiskey opens with delicate fruity and floral aromatics, enhanced by subtle vanilla from traditional oak aging. The Mizunara finish transforms the palate, introducing distinctive dark chocolate and orange notes alongside warm cinnamon and exotic sandalwood. At seven years, it strikes an ideal balance between youthful vibrancy and mature complexity, with the Mizunara influence adding sophisticated spice without overwhelming the Irish whiskey's inherent smoothness.

The Double Gold at the New York International Spirits Competition reflects the exceptional craftsmanship required to successfully marry Irish and Japanese techniques. Mizunara finishing is extremely challenging - the wood is porous and can easily over-influence the spirit, but Glendalough has achieved the perfect balance. The 90-point score recognizes not just the flavor quality, but the innovation and technical skill needed to create this East-meets-West masterpiece.

Serve neat or with just a few drops of water to unlock the complex aromatics from the Mizunara finish. The sandalwood and spice notes are delicate and can be masked by ice or mixers. Allow it to breathe for a few minutes after pouring - the exotic wood influences will become more pronounced as it opens up. The medium body makes it approachable for both whiskey newcomers and connoisseurs seeking something genuinely different.
