Corowa distillery, situated on the banks of the Murray River, is fast becoming the benchmark mainland whisky countrywide. The Bosque Verde uses seasoned American oak barrels that previously aged Aussie fine tawny. The result is stunning. Rich dried fruits (cherries, raisins, and plums) pave the way for a chocolatey finish. Silky and moreish, this is a hard one to put down.

Why do we love this whisky?

Surrounded by the largest grain producing regions of Australia, Corowa are uniquely placed to make use of locally grown and sourced raw material. This level of control, coupled with their own off-site cooperage, means Corowa can tweak every aspect of the production process to their liking. Truly the pioneers of mainland Aussie whisky, this is a dram to get into while it's still around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Corowa's strategic position in Australia's largest grain-producing regions gives them unprecedented access to premium local raw materials, allowing complete control from grain to glass. This geographical advantage, combined with their on-site cooperage, enables them to fine-tune every production element - from selecting specific grain varieties to customising barrel char levels. It's this farm-to-bottle approach that sets them apart from distilleries relying on imported ingredients or third-party cooperages.

The medium-bodied profile creates an ideal balance between the lighter, more delicate Highland-style whiskies and the robust, full-bodied expressions from regions like Islay. This weight allows the caramel and fruity notes to develop gradually on the palate without overwhelming the senses, making it approachable for newcomers while offering enough complexity for seasoned whisky drinkers. The medium body also means it pairs beautifully with both light appetisers and richer desserts.

Winning both Silver at the World Whiskies Awards and Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition demonstrates this whisky can compete on the global stage against established Scottish and Irish distilleries. These competitions are notoriously competitive, with hundreds of entries from around the world, making Corowa's success particularly impressive for a relatively young Australian distillery. The recognition validates Australia's emerging reputation as a serious whisky-producing nation.

This flavour combination creates a beautifully orchestrated tasting journey that mirrors traditional sherry cask maturation profiles. The caramel provides a rich, sweet foundation from barrel interaction, while the fruity notes add brightness and complexity, likely from both the grain character and wood influence. The raisin notes tie everything together with dried fruit richness, suggesting extended maturation that concentrates flavours - a hallmark of quality single malt production.

While Tasmania dominated early Australian whisky production, Corowa was among the first to prove that mainland Australia could produce world-class single malt whisky despite different climatic conditions. Their success paved the way for other mainland distilleries and helped establish Australia's whisky credentials internationally. Being pioneers means getting in early on what many consider the next great whisky frontier, before prices and availability become constrained by growing global demand.
